FogOfWar Maps Privacy
Updated October 25, 2026 · Brummblebee LLC
FogOfWar Maps stores the map images you choose, their alignment settings, names and descriptions, GPS tracks, manually drawn routes, photo markers and categories, and coverage-area boundaries and styles. Recorded GPS points include location, timestamp, altitude and horizontal accuracy. Drawn routes store the points, order and styles you choose, without fabricated GPS point times or elevation. Location access also centers the map. Recording starts when you choose it and ends when you stop it or the app's recording session ends.
Data saves locally with Apple's Core Data framework. With iCloud available, saved data and copied images synchronize through Apple's CloudKit service in your private iCloud account. Brummblebee does not receive a copy on its own servers. Apple processes iCloud and Maps data under its applicable terms and privacy policies. Your Apple settings and service availability control synchronization and device backup.
Setup & Access keeps the dates of location-permission request attempts in local app preferences. These dates are not sent to Brummblebee or synchronized through the app's CloudKit database. Current access is read from Apple's permission state; recorded requests do not imply that access was granted.
Apple's Photos or Files picker provides the files you select. Photos selection does not grant access to your entire library. The app creates normalized image copies: up to 4096 pixels for overlays and 2048 pixels for marker photos. A new marker may use valid GPS metadata from its selected photo as its saved coordinate. Resized marker photos do not retain the original image metadata. Copied images work without their original Photos item or external drive staying available.
The app uses Apple's MetricKit to receive delayed performance measurements and diagnostic counts. It keeps numeric summaries on this device for up to 30 days, limited to 64 reports and 512 KiB. Summaries contain report periods, app versions, CPU/GPU time, foreground/background duration, peak memory, logical disk writes, launch/hang histograms and diagnostic category counts when available. They do not contain coordinates, map names or content, photos, account/device identifiers, raw crash stacks or custom signpost data. This diagnostic directory is excluded from device backup and the app's private iCloud sync. It is separate from map backups. Settings → Performance lets you share summaries explicitly, clear them, or turn retention off (which clears local summaries). There is no automatic diagnostics upload to Brummblebee. Copies you choose to share remain with their destination after local deletion. A summary sent to support by email may be linked to your sender identity. Support submissions are used to investigate performance and support requests and retained as needed to resolve them. Contact FogOfWarMaps@brummblebee.com to request deletion of our support copy; other destinations have their own policies. Expired on-device reports are pruned when the app next launches, processes a report or refreshes Performance.
The app has no advertising or third-party analytics SDK. Apple may supply TestFlight feedback and diagnostics under your Apple settings. Storage Overview measures record counts and local file metadata without reading photos or saved text. Its optional share summary contains aggregate record counts, app-file sizes, version, measurement time and whether iCloud is configured; it excludes names, notes, coordinates, photos, account identifiers, paths and available device capacity. Nothing is sent until you choose a share destination. Information you choose to send to support passes through your selected service and the support mailbox.
You can change location permission, stop recording, and delete individual records in the app. Backup & Data also offers Delete All Saved Data after explicit confirmation. Deletions synchronize to other devices. Manage iCloud access through Apple Settings. Turning off sync does not necessarily remove local data; deleting the app can remove unsynced changes.
You can export completed tracks or drawn routes as GPX, the map view as PNG, or saved records and images as a .fogofwar backup. These files may contain photos and precise locations. Files can save them locally, in iCloud Drive or on a connected drive. Exported copies remain at their chosen destinations after app records are deleted. Share them only with people or services you choose. Import adds copies to the app and, when enabled, your private iCloud data.
An upgrade may retain a device-only recovery backup of the older database and original image dependencies. Older images and records may remain there after live-record deletion; this copy does not expire automatically. Contact support for recovery or removal assistance. iCloud synchronization is separate from a historical backup.
