FogOfWar Maps layers your own map images over Apple Maps and records GPS tracks on iPhone and iPad.
Choose Import Overlay on the map or Overlays tab. Select an image from Photos, adjust its position, scale, rotation and opacity, then Save. Cancel or dismiss the editor to discard unsaved changes. A separate app-owned copy of the selected image is used, with its longest dimension limited to 4096 pixels; transparent images retain transparency. Keep the original if you need its full resolution.
Start from the map, grant location access, and tap Stop when finished. Background recording currently requires Always authorization. Saved points survive relaunch, but an interrupted recording does not restart automatically. If a save fails, keep the app open, free storage and retry. Pending changes cannot survive process termination until successfully saved. Force-quitting the app stops recording.
The app saves locally using Core Data before Apple's CloudKit schedules synchronization. Use the same Apple Account on each device, enable iCloud for FogOfWar Maps, and allow time for transfers. Network access, available iCloud storage and Apple service availability affect timing. Settings shows account and transfer status; checking status does not force immediate upload or download. Overlay image copies travel with their saved overlay data, rather than relying on a device-specific Photos link or an external drive.
Cloud sync does not remove the need for local storage. The local database and image attachments occupy device storage. Core Data manages large binary attachments outside SQLite where appropriate. Completed image adoption allows redundant import files to be cleaned safely. A successful legacy upgrade keeps a database backup and retains its original image dependencies for recovery, which consume additional storage with no automatic expiry. Deleting live records does not remove pre-upgrade copies from this local recovery backup. There is no external-drive storage mode or offline Apple Maps download feature in this beta.
Deletions sync across devices. iCloud sync is not versioned backup or an undo history. Keep device backups enabled. Do not uninstall the app while local changes are waiting to sync. Backups and restores are managed by Apple's device settings; the app does not offer a full export/restore command yet.
An upgrade preserves the legacy database before migration. If a legacy relationship is ambiguous, opening stops with a recoverable error rather than guessing or deleting data. Retry after resolving storage or availability problems. Do not delete the app to troubleshoot a migration failure; contact support.
Map overlays, alignment and GPS recording are the current working features. Markers and areas remain unfinished. Do not rely on a beta app as your only navigation or recording tool.
